Headhunter - Juke

When Headhunter was here recently we took him to the local community radio station FBi. Instead of his usual deep, deep dubstep he went completely the other way and played a set of Juke music. Coming out of Chicago, Juke is categorized by its fast beats, minimal structure and dirty, dirty lyrics. I'd never heard it before and my first thought was "DJ Godfather crossed with Spank Rock". It's not like anything else on this blog but it's fresh and exciting but if you hate the music, you should at least get a giggle from the vocals. Fuck me in my face, indeed!

Tracklist pulled from the FBi website:

Keep On Jukin
Freekin Me On The Flo DJ Spinn
BeetleJuke Leatherface
That Booty DJ Spinn
King Kong Leatherface
What You Workin Wit DJ Spinn
Put Yo Mouth On Me DJ Spinn
Kick Yo Ass Leatherface

RA.091 Pole

This is the Resident Advisor podcast no. 091 mixed by Pole from February 2008. It's no longer available on their website so I thought I'd re-up. Excellent 56 minute set featuring a really good mix of dubstep and reggae. Different styles of dubstep are featured from roof shakers like Benga's Crunked Up to the minimalism of Shackleton and 2562. Both sit really well alongside the reggae. Very recommended.

Pole - Intro (~scape)
Pangaea - Coiled (Hessle Audio)
Shackleton - You Bring Me Down (Skull Disco)
Mala - Left Leg Out (DMZ)
Roy Lee - Give Me Power (Trojan)
Benny Ill, Kode9 & The Culprit - Fat Larry's Skank (Kode9 Remix) (Tempa)
Benga - Crunked Up (Tempa)
2562 - Channel Two (Tectonic)
Danny Hensworth - Mr. Money Man (Upsetters)
Johnny Osbourne - Purify Your Heart (Trojan)
Althea and Donna - Uptown Top Ranking (Joe Gibbs Records)
DJ Pinch - 136 Trek (Punch Drunk)
Untold - Test Signal (Hessle Audio)
CNE Skank - Forgive Them Lord (The Upsetters)
Max Romeo - Birth of Reggae Music (Wackie's)

Bloc Weekend Highlights: Pole Live

If you don't know Pole then get downloading! The German techno and sometimes dubstep producer and owner of awesome record label ~scape has been one of my favourite artists for a while now. I just love the way both his techno and dubstep productions manage to keep the same aesthetic, meaning they're always easily identifiable as Pole tunes which makes for some seamless and blinding sets. Usually I edit out as much talking as I can but I left his intro in because a. I'm a fanboy and b. he sounds like my friend, also names Stefan.

Bloc Weekend Highlights: Pinch in the Mix

Pinch's set from Bloc Weekend. Decent set but the MC ruins it through a combination of dodgy MCing and being turned up way too loud.

Ghosts On Tape in the Mix

Imagine the soundtrack to a perfect beach party. No generic salsa or music that sounds like the fucking Sex And The City theme song, just punchy, hands in the air bass music. Ghosts On Tape is from San Francisco but his music is like a bass’d out tour of the tropics. Check this out before summer ends. (Or if you're a Northerner download and have it ready for when Spring rolls around!)

Ghosts On Tape - Woofer Cooker (World Premiere)
Ghosts On Tape - Equator Jam (World Premiere)
Ghosts On Tape - Ice Blood
Ghosts On Tape - Zodiac King demo (World Premiere)
Ghosts On Tape - Scraped Up
Lemonade - Sunchips (Ghosts On Tape Remix)

Raffertie in the Mix

The first mix of 2009 comes from newcomer Raffertie. Hailing from Birmingham, Raffertie makes the kind of day-glo dubstep that's so silly it makes Rusko sound like Shackleton. The mix features 90s pop samples, "mash-ups", Whitney Houston and the most wobble you've heard in a dubstep set since it became "uncool". Raffertie already has his fair share of haters but with a 12" on the way from Planet Mu, he's sure to get a decent following also.

Raffertie - Intro
Ini Kamoze - Hotstepper (Raffertie's Remix) (Dubplate)
Raffertie - Stomping Grounds VIP (On The Brink Recordings)
Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Raffertie Re-Dub) (Dubplate)
Raffertie - ANTISOCIAL (Seclusiasis)
The Scarlet Harlots - Backlash (Raffertie's Remix) (Dubplate)
The Squire of Gothos ft. Shifty Moova - Out Of Order (Acapella) (Raffertie Re-Edit) (Dubplate)
Raffertie - Eyes Closed (Seclusiasis)
Raffertie - Wobble Horror! (Seclusiasis)
Raffertie - Music Take Me (Dubplate)
